Volunteer for PIPSI!

Volunteers play an essential role in helping the Pea Island Preservation Society share the history of the Pea Island Lifesaving Station and the African American heritage of Roanoke Island. Whether assisting at the Cookhouse Museum, supporting community events, or helping with educational programs, volunteers make it possible for us to reach visitors, students, and families throughout the region.

Ways to Serve

  • Cookhouse Museum Support — Greet visitors, answer questions, and help maintain a welcoming environment for guests learning about the lifesaving legacy.
  • Events and Programs — Assist with Juneteenth, presentations, and community gatherings that highlight the stories of Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island surfmen.
  • Community Outreach — Help share information about the Society’s mission, programs, and opportunities for involvement.
  • Historical Preservation Support — Contribute to projects that preserve artifacts, photographs, and documents connected to the Pea Island Station and the broader African American history of Roanoke Island.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteering with the Pea Island Preservation Society offers a meaningful way to honor a powerful local and national story. Volunteers help ensure that the courage, leadership, and service of the Pea Island surfmen continue to inspire future generations.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us. We welcome individuals, families, students, and community groups who want to support this important work.
